Humans have pretty much always been running, but it has not always been for the purpose of recreation. At first, running was primarily a tactic for survival because early humans needed to avoid predators and hunt for food. Later, running evolved into more of a competitive sport with the creation of the Olympic games in ancient Greece. Eventually, running became a more widespread pastime for people of all backgrounds. There are now thousands of organized long and short distance running teams, competitive races, and individuals who run for personal enjoyment or to reach their health goals. http://www.myrunningtips.com/history-of-running.html

The sport of running has not always been very inclusive. Over the years, women and members of minority groups have faced discrimination. This picture shows Katherine Switzer, the first female to complete the Boston Marathon, being harassed by male competitors.
